World Cup 2022: 'Sports should not be politicized' - French president Macron says

As the biggest sports event in the world, the World Cup draws ever closer, the French President has made his decision clear that he would go to Qatar to watch the games if France advance to the semi-finals. He has also come out to defend his decision.

The tiny golf nation won the hosting rights to the 2022 world cup 2022. For the very first time in world cup history, the tournament was moved to the winter months as a result of the extreme heat Qatar experienced during the summer.

Not everyone is happy that the world cup is being hosted by Qatar as the tiny golf nation has come under scrutiny for how it won the rights, how the migrant workers who built the stadiums were treated, issues related to free speech as well as how LGBTQ people are being treated.

On Thursday, November 17, President Emmanuel Macron said that "sports should not be politicized."

President Macron also added that the issues relating to Qatar's human rights record and environment were "questions you have to ask yourself when you award the event."

The Élysée Palace on Monday said that President Macron will go to Qatar if the French National team makes it to the Semi-Finals. They specified that the French president "wrote them a message" to this effect.

In the next few days, France will start to defend its title. It is in the Group D with Tunisia, Demar,  and Australia.
