Woman jailed for hitting her 8-year-old son's genitals with iron rod over a piece of chicken

At Misisi Township, Lusaka, Zambia, a 33-year-old woman is being jailed because she assaulted her 8-year-old son over a piece of chicken.

The woman identified as Jessy Banda has been sentenced to 5 years in prison by Lusaka Magistrate Trevpr Kasanda on Friday, January 7, after she pleaded guilty.

Jessy Banda was charged with one count of assault on her child after she brutally assaulted her son by hitting his genitals with an iron bar on December 26, 2021.

Banda pleaded guilty and also explained to the court how she cruelly used an iron bar to hit her son on his private parts after he stole a piece of chicken. She also acknowledged she had no authority to assault the child.

Based on facts presented, prosecutor Muleya Simuusa told the court that Banda used a sharp object to hit the boy causing a serious injury to his scrotum.

According to the prosecutor, it was the crying of the boy that a good Samaritan heard and then came to his help by rushing him to the hospital where he was attended to and a medical report was issued.

The prosecutor also said that a police officer identified as detective inspector Munalula took up the matter and arrested banda who was then on the run.

The prosecutor also noted that Banda voluntarily and freely admitted to the charge upon which she was convicted and she confirmed that all the facts presented to her were true and correct.

Banda begged for leniency, stating that she did not know that she will brutalize her son to that extent.  Another reason why she asked for mercy is that her son would suffer if she is sentenced to prison. She begged that she has learned her lesson and that she would never repeat it.

The court jailed her for five years as that is the minimum jail term for persons who assault children. This is done to protect children.
