The court grants Abba Kyari’s request to present more evidence to stop his extradition to the United States
The Federal high
court has granted the request of former super cop Abba Kyari, to file more
evidence to challenge a suit by the government in Nigeria to extradite him to
the US to face corruption charges.
Allow me to take you back to two months ago
when the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, filed the
extradition proceedings against Abba Kiyari since he is wanted by the US government
over pending fraud charges.
It was a tense court
session as you can expect from a case as serious as this. Through an
application filed by his lead counsel Nureni Jimoh, Kyari challenged the
lawsuit. After careful consideration,
Justice Inyang Ekwo granted the request.

This request did not
go down well with the federal government`s lawyer Pius Akuta who openly opposed
the application of Kyari. Jimoh pleaded with the court to permit Mr. Kyari to
produce an additional document that establishes his innocence in the face of
the fraud charges leveled against him.
From his point of
view, Akuta feels that the Abba Kyari request is just for him to correct any
deficiencies in the documented evidence he has presented earlier.
This led to a series of debates but in the
end, Justice Ekwo granted the request stating that the court would have enough
time to determine the probate value to be attached to the additional evidence.
The
suit was thereafter adjourned until the 3rd of June to get a definite hearing
in the extradition suit.
