Russia arrests anti-war protesters

Anti-war protesters across Russia who are demonstrating against their country's invasion of Ukraine are being arrested. 

 Warnings were issued to Russian citizens by Russia s investigative committee that they should not take part in what was described as  "unauthorized" protests "associated with the tense foreign political situation". The committee added that people should be aware of the negative and legal consequences of their actions and this includes criminal Liability.  

The statement read; 

 

"The law provides for severe punishment for organizing mass riots, as well as for resisting law enforcement officers."

It added that citizens who undertake "such illegal acts may face imprisonment."  Around 27 organizers have been detained by the authorities. According to information from rights monitor OVD-info, they are being detained under Russia's strict anti-corruption law. 

 Viral videos show Russians taking to the streets protesting in multiple cities including St Petersburg and Novosibirsk. This demonstration started a day after Russia`s President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine.
