Police arrest serial ATM fraudster in Delta State
The Delta State
Police Command has arrested one serial ATM snatcher in Ozoro Isoko North LGA of
Delta State.
A spokesperson for
the Police command DSP Bright Edafe in a statement on Tuesday, November 8 said
the suspect named Ojo Amos who hails from Agbara-Otor in Ughelli North Local government
area specializes in Stealing ATM cards from unsuspecting victims.
“On the 2nd
of November 2021, at about 13:00 hrs upon receiving a tip-off that the suspect
was seen in a POS stand located beside the bank in Ozoro branch. With that tip,
off, the operatives of the Nigerian Police force swung into action in conjunction
with the chairman Olotu Vigilante in Ozoro Delta state/ There they arrested the
suspect with 33 ATM cards, and a cash sum of fifty thousand Naira (#50,00 ) was
recovered from him DSP Edafe stated.
The suspect confessed
to having stolen one of the cards from oneRufai Abdulahi at a bank in Kwale and
he left immediately. He also confessed he withdrew the sum of two hundred and
fifty thousand Naira (#250,000) from the victim's account.
According to preliminary investigations, it
was seen that the suspect usually stays behind his victims at the ATM machine
waiting patiently and also targets people who he feels are not educated, or those he feels are having difficulty
operating the ATM. He moves closer under the guise of being a bank staff trying
to help them and then in the process swap their ATM card.
The suspect also
confessed that he looks closely at them as they enter their ATM pins, memorizes
it after swapping the ATM cards he will use either a POS or the ATM to empty
their bank accounts. He confessed to having been doing this for the past four
years.
In a statement, the
commissioner of Police Delta State CP Ari Muhammed Ali urged members of the public
to be very law-abiding. He also advised them to learn from the regular reports
of stolen ATM cards and asked them to be vigilant when making use of their ATM
cards and ensure that only uniform bank staff are allowed to assist them when
the need arises.
