Police Arrest Lawmaker, 160 Others For Ballot Box Snatching, Related Offenses In Kano
Among
those arrested is Isiaku Danja the current member of
the house of representatives in Kano state. According to the press briefing of
the Kano State commissioner of police Muhammad Gumel, the suspects were
arrested for carrying out acts regarded as electoral offenses during the Governorship
and State of Assembly Elections in the North-West state. Asides from snatching ballot
boxes, some of the suspects were arrested for vote burning and attempts to burn
the office of INEC in the state. The
police recovered weapons from the suspects.
“We had a total of 161 arrests made during the elections. These
arrests were made for offenses such as ballot box snatching, vote buying, and
attempting to burn an INEC office,” he said.
“We are committed to ensuring that the electoral
process is peaceful and free of any form of violence, and we will not hesitate
to bring to justice anyone who tries to disrupt this process.”

The commissioner of police also stressed the
need for members of the public to cooperate with the men of the Nigerian police
force in other to ensure the success of the electoral process. He also
encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity around them and avoid any
form of violence or electoral malpractice.
“We need the support of everyone in the
community to make sure that the elections are conducted smoothly and without
any disruptions. We urge everyone to be peaceful and to respect the law,” the
police chief added.
The arrest made by the police shows that the
force is committed to ensuring a free and fair election.
The authorities have also made it clear that
they will not tolerate any form of violence or electoral malpractice and they
will do anything possible to make sure that the elections are conducted peacefully.
