Nigeria calls for dialogue amid diplomatic tensions with Niger Republic
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the growing diplomatic tension with Niger Republic through constructive dialogue, dismissing allegations of collusion with France as baseless and counterproductive.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to peace, stability, and diplomacy in West Africa. He called for candid discussions with Niger’s leadership, led by Gen. Abdourahman Tchiani, to address mutual concerns and rebuild trust between the two neighboring nations.
Tchiani, the head of Niger’s junta, recently accused France of conspiring with militant groups in the Lake Chad region to destabilize Niger, claiming that Nigeria was complicit in the alleged plot. These accusations, made during a Christmas Day interview, have sparked apprehension among residents in Nigeria-Niger border communities and heightened regional tensions.
Responding to the allegations, Tuggar firmly denied any involvement by Nigeria, labeling the claims as unfounded. “We reaffirm our respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in alignment with ECOWAS principles,” Tuggar said. “Nigeria remains committed to fostering dialogue and mutual respect to address shared challenges.”
The Foreign Affairs Minister urged Niger’s leadership to engage in open discussions, highlighting the shared historical and cultural ties between the two nations. He called for calm and warned against baseless accusations that could undermine regional stability.
“As brothers and neighbors, Nigeria and Niger share deep historical and cultural ties, underscored by trade and economic interdependence,” Tuggar stated. “Unfounded allegations only serve to create unnecessary tensions and threaten the collective progress of our region.”
To ease tensions, Tuggar proposed confidence-building measures, including joint humanitarian efforts to support border communities affected by the strained relations. He also appealed to regional and international partners to prioritize reconciliation and stability over divisive narratives.
“We are prepared to explore collective support to alleviate the humanitarian impact on border communities,” Tuggar said. “We call upon regional and international partners to support efforts aimed at fostering reconciliation and stability, rather than deepening divisions.”
The minister underscored Nigeria’s dedication to diplomacy, mutual respect, and collaboration, expressing optimism that constructive engagement could pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future for both nations.
“Nigeria remains guided by the principles of diplomacy and peace,” he concluded. “Through constructive engagement, we are confident that we can work together to build a better future for our people and the entire region.”
