Landslide In Columbia Buries School And Kills Three Children
On Thursday, July 14, 2022, three children were killed by a landslide
that buried a rural school in the municipality of the Andes in northwestern Colombia authorities
have reported.
The pre-school and first-grade children were
taking recess along with one mother of the students and a teacher when the landslide
hit the school.
"We
give very sad news: three children lost their lives in this event," the
mayor of Andes, Carlos Osorio, told the media.
An
earlier report had said eight children were trapped.
"Fortunately,
17 students got out alive … the teacher and the mother also," Osorio
said, adding that two other children were in a nearby hospital and are already
in stable condition.
The
Villagers could not hold themselves when they came en mass to support the
rescuers from the military who came to save the children.
The video that has since gone viral on social
media showed dozens of people with shovels trying to remove heaps of rubbles.
Two digging machines were also deployed.

According
to Eliana Rincones, who also happens to be the school’s only teacher, there
were 22 children present at the time of the landslide.
"We
were at recess when suddenly we heard something very loud; we all turned (to
look) and in a matter of seconds we all ran," she said.
"We
didn’t even know where we were running."
The
landslide was caused by heavy rains plaguing much of Colombia.
