Flooding: Demolition Awaits Buildings On Natural Drainage – Delta Govt
It was during
a sensitization exercise in Warri South and Uvwie councils that Mr Frank Omare
the Director of The Delta State Government on Special duties insisted that no
illegal structure would be spared no matter how important and highly placed the
owner is in the society.
According to
the government, this initiative will help free the flow of water through the
right channels and will help to prevent flooding and its negative consequences.
Governor
Sheriff Oborevwori just three weeks ago carried out an inspection tour of
waterways and drainage systems in the city of Warri and its environs. During
the tour, he identified illegal structures blocking the free flow of water.
The director of special duties also went on a sensitization
tour during which he issued a final warning and notice to the owners of
buildings in drainage channels to vacate before the planned demolition by the
state government.
Buildings on waterways
were marked for demolition during the exercise because they blocked the water
course.
Some residents
are in support of the move by the government in the hope that it would solve
the lingering issue of flooding in the area. Blocked canals and refuse dumps
are a common sight, and the government is optimistic that it would soon ensure
environmental restoration in every part of the state.
A statement
from Omare reveals that there shall be no scared cow once the exercise begins.
The government is determined to reduce the incidence of flooding and its
adverse effect on the environment and the lives of residents.
