EFCC vows to scrutinize LG administrations amid financial autonomy ruling
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has pledged to intensify its scrutiny of local government administrations in Nigeria, following the Supreme Court’s ruling granting financial autonomy to the 774 local councils.
Speaking at a dialogue organized on Monday by Agora Policy, a think tank, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede emphasized the need for good governance at the local level, highlighting three essential elements: accountability, transparency, and citizen participation.
Olukoyede, represented by Friday Ebelo, EFCC Director and Coordinator of Special Duties, stressed that “solid and development-minded people” are required to lead local government administrations to ensure effective governance.
He added, “It is on this note that the EFCC served a notice to the local government administrations that it will not be business as usual. Their activities will be scrutinised.
“We’ll make a deliberate effort to bring the presence of government to our people at the local government level.”
The EFCC’s vow to scrutinize local government activities comes as a response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which declared illegal the practice of state governors appointing caretaker committees to run local councils.
