Court Awards N60million To Glory Okolie Against The Nigerian Police After She Was Detained Over Alleged IPOB Links
On Thursday, June 23rd, 2022, a Federal high court in Abuja
has awarded 60 million Naira in general and punitive damages to one Gloria
Okolie. The case was decided in her favor against the Nigerian police.
Okolie who filed a
fundamental rights enforcement case received support from more than 51 civil
society groups. Okolie who filed the case in the FCT high court requested that
the court mandate the respondents being the Attorney general of the federal and
the Nigerian Police Force to pay her damages worth one billion Naira and
general and punitive damages for infringing on her human rights.

Justice Y. Haliyu on
Thursday, June 23 presided over the court and granted every relief sought after
in Okolie`s case. Okolie suffered illegal
detention by the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team of the
Nigerian Police Force for more than 150 days on an allegation that she was
working as a spy for the Indigenous People of Biafra. (IPOB).
While granting the
origination motion and reliefs filed by Okolie, Haliyu awarded the sum of
60,000,000 in punitive and general charges caused to her by the police.
